But as Katz travels in the footsteps of Butler, from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to Shanghai, China and back, he illuminates how the Corps had been used in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries to make de facto colonies out of the Philippines, Nicaragua, Panama, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, American Samoa and the U.S. It’s understandable for those of us who were taught in history classes that America is not an imperialist country to be taken aback by the book’s title mentioning empire. Lejeune, head of the Marine Corps, calls on Gen. Congressman and member of a prominent Philadelphia Quaker family, and takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of his many military exploits around the world. This way of thinking about knowledge is called foundationalism. Such a belief could then provide a firm foundation on which all subsequent beliefs are grounded and could thus be known as true. But to say that our beliefs are justified, we have to be able to base them ultimately on a belief that is itself indubitable. ![]() He suggests that it is pointless to claim that something is real or exists unless we first know how such a claim could be known as a justified true belief. According to Descartes, before we can describe the nature of reality (as is done in metaphysics) or say what it means for something to be or exist (which is the focus of ontology), we must first consider what we mean when we say we know what reality, being, or existence is. René Descartes (1596-1650) is an example of a rationalist. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ready for retirement at 44, he agrees to take on one lucrative last job, and pre-empts the reader by acknowledging the cliché on King’s behalf: “‘one last job’ is a sub-genre. Most writers, if they managed to produce novels as meatily ambitious and emotionally involving as some of Stephen King’s recent tomes (The Outsider, The Institute), would probably feel the need to give their brains and fingers a rest for a decade or so. ![]() ![]() ![]() The King’s long-suffering wife, Queen Victoria’s English-born granddaughter Queen Victoria Eugenia, a fashion plate herself, was the subject of some unusually experimental and striking Sorolla portraits, two remarkable examples of which are in the exhibition. Sorolla’s dashing painting of King Alfonso XIII in his Hussars uniform in the dappled light of an open air park-along with a stately but unusual image of the king when he was Regent with the splendidly gowned Queen Mother- served as the artist’s calling card in America. His portraits, however, found special favor amongst the plutocrats of the United States, from whence several of the loans hail. Sorolla was principally known for his joyful plein air pictures that capture the spangle of light on seawater and Spain’s bracing, wind-swept beaches. Masterfully curated by Eloy Martinez de la Pera, the show juxtaposes Joachim Sorolla’s bravura portraits (in the manner of his great friend John Singer Sargent) with artfully matched contemporary clothing. In the morning, I set off bleary-eyed with Eugenia for the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum for the first part of the Sorolla and Fashion exhibition. ![]() |
